Student Instructions:

Introduction
This activity requires you to perform two substantial pieces of music as part of an ensemble or cultural group of ideally between three and seven members.

This performance could be, for example, in front of an audience of invited parents, at a school concert, community event, cultural festival, regional or national kapa haka competition, or at Polyfest or Pacifica Beats.

You will be assessed on how effective and convincing your contribution is to the cohesion, balance, intonation, feel, style, accuracy, and confident presentation of the group’s performance.

Task
Confirm the composition of your group and selection of two pieces with your teacher. Each piece must be of sufficient significance and/or complexity and length to allow you to demonstrate a range of musical, ensemble, and technical skills. Each member of the group must play a separate or uniquely identifiable part.

Improvisation may be used.

Rehearse your pieces in preparation for performance and, at the agreed time, perform your two pieces in front of an audience.

Aim for your contribution to be assured and sustained with convincing musical responses. Remember that you are being assessed on your ensemble skills (your contribution to success of the group performance), not as a soloist.

Your contribution to the two pieces will be assessed holistically across both pieces of music. The emphasis will be on the musicality and qualities of the performance rather than on minor technical inaccuracies or errors.

Your performance must be video recorded for assessment and moderation purposes.
